Dorothy Mae Paul Cooper, 85, of Apalachicola, passed away Monday, July 20, 2020 in Apalachicola.
She was a native of Galveston, Texas where she met and married Lonnie, the love of her life, in 1957.
Dorothy had a love for Texas and horses. Even as an adult she loved to ride every chance she got. As a teenager she performed at rodeos and competed in barrel racing competitions.
After the marriage they moved to Lonnie’s hometown of Apalachicola, where she would learn to shuck oysters and this would prove to be her niche in life. She would shuck oysters for the next 53 years and win several oyster shucking contests.
Dorothy was the daughter of Joseph Henry Paul and Josephine Whitmarsh Paul, of Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents. her spouse Lonnie, sister Betty Ann, and brother Joe Henry Paul, of Texas.
She is survived by her caregivers, niece Betty Gilbert Davis (Larry), of Tallahassee, and niece Terry Cooper Thomas (John), of Maryland and Apalachicola; brother-in-law Rev. Levy Cooper and host of other nieces and nephews in Florida and Texas. Last but not least, her four-legged companion of nine years Poncho.
A graveside service will be held Thursday July 23 at 11 a.m. at Magnolia Cemetery in Apalachicola. Service under the direction of Comforter Funeral Home.
