Carol Barfield, the chair of the county’s Democratic Executive Committee, is hoping to earn the right to attend the Democrats’ national convention, slated for August in Madison, Wisconsin.

Barfield is a delegate pledged to the all-but-certain nominee, former vice president Joe Biden, who will bring to the convention floor most all the Florida delegates.

Because of the coronavirus, there will be no in=person vote for the convention delegates. Selection will be voted on electronically up until 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 16.Registered Democrats in any county in Florida, who are the only ones entitled to vote, must request their electronic ballot by registering at www.floridadems.org/delegates. Those without access to the internet, a computer or a smartphone to vote online, can call (954) 893-2355 to speak with or leave a message for a team member from the Florida Democratic Party.

Barfield is hoping her status not only as county chair, but as head of the state party’s Small County Coalition and as director of Region 6, will help her get elected.

Florida Congressional District 2, is the largest congressional district in Florida by land area and consists of all of Bay, Calhoun, Dixie, Franklin, Gilchrist, Gulf, Jackson, Lafayette, Levy, Liberty, Suwannee, Taylor, Wakulla and Washington counties, and portions of Columbia, Holmes, Jefferson, Leon and Marion counties.

Because of the vote two months ago, Biden gets three delegates from the district, one male, one female and one who can be of either sex. All three cannot be from the same county.

“I now have four or five counties out of the 19 I know are supporting me,” she said, including Gulf.

In addition, people can vote for Bernie Sanders delegates, although he is only entitled to one from the district.

“It’s all based on then congressional district size and turnout for the vote,” Barfield said. “I think I’d be a good representative from this area, I’m well-known from previous work.

She said the Small County Coalition, which is for counties with under 40,000 registered Dems, has already attracted 41 counties, with three more on the way.

As for her pitch to the party faithful, she is all in for Biden. “I believe that Joe is the right man for the season we’re in. He can right this ship so we don’t go down,” she said. ““He gives us all hope that we can righten this thing. Joe Biden is the man to make America great again.”
