New Year’s baskets gladden 75 seniors

The new year brings new beginnings for some and continued needs for others. The ECCC (Elder Care Community Council) realizes that some homebound seniors are simply unable, for many reasons, to get some basic household necessities.

The Senior New Year Basket campaign was launched three years ago to help meet these needs. Donors were requested to give household items, which included paper towels, toilet paper, garbage bags and soap, as well as personal toiletries like new toothbrushes.

On Sunday, Jan. 19, ECCC volunteers gathered at Holy Family Senior Center to assemble 75 laundry baskets that were delivered to seniors Tuesday, Jan. 21. Recipients were most grateful and excited to receive these wonderful gifts of hope.

Sondra Furbee, coordinator of the food delivery twice a month, said "ECCC coordinates seven teams or individuals who deliver food pantry items to those seniors who are not able to pick up their allotments.

“Once a year the deliveries include a basket of household and personal items. The recipients are always grateful for the food items, but when we add in the baskets they just beam with appreciation,” she said. “There were basic items such as paper towels and laundry detergent, but also warm, cozy socks, just in time for cold nights.

“A big thanks to all who donated items or funds to purchase items and to the people who delivered 75 baskets in Apalachicola, Eastpoint and Carrabelle,” said Furbee.

“It made their day and that made mine!” said Janine Gedman, ECCC delivery volunteer.

ECCC thanks all our community partners, organizations and individuals who donated items, money or their time. It is because of you that this campaign was successful for the third year in a row.
