State health officials are recommending that anyone who recently traveled through Port Everglades and is experiencing symptoms to to contact their health care provider or county health department and self-isolate for 14 days.

State health officials have identified a third coronavirus case in Florida that is associated with a cruise company that works out of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.


The Florida Department of Health announced early Tuesday that a 69-year-old Broward County woman tested positive for the virus.


“The Department, through an extensive epidemiological investigation, identified this new case as the third positive case of COVID-19 associated with Port Everglades in Broward County, Florida,” according to a DOH press release. “Further, all three cases are connected to or employed by Metro Cruise Services – a company that operates at Port Everglades.”

Employees of Metro Cruise Services “with any association to these cases” also are encouraged to self-isolate.


As of Tuesday morning there have been 15 coronavirus cases diagnosed in Florida and two deaths, both individuals in their 70s. Broward County has the most cases, with four.


The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending people avoid cruise travel.

“CDC recommends travelers, particularly those with underlying health issues, defer all cruise ship travel worldwide,” according to the CDC website.


Port Everglades is one of the busiest cruise ship ports in the world, with major companies such as Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean operating there.
