A 55-year-old Apalachicola man died early Sunday morning after an apparent drowning at the Mill Pond.

In the unattended death report filed by the Apalachicola Police Department, Wayne L. Worthington, 55, was pronounced dead at about 7:25 a.m. by emergency medical personnel from Weems Memorial Hospital ambulance service.

Known by friends as “Coco,” Worthington was last known to be alive about 12 hours earlier, by his daughter, Amanda Worthington-Brannon.

“The way it looks he was riding his bicycle, to help a shrimper, and he went to go get up on the dock,” said Police Chief Bobby Varnes. “It appears he fell off the ledge and hit his head.”

Varnes said a team from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement came in to review the scene. “Until we get the autopsy back from the medical examiner, we won’t know (but) it all looks like an accident,” he said.

Worthington was known to live both on a boat at the Mill Pond as well as at 692 CC Land Road, according to the report. It said other than high blood pressure, he had no known medical history, and was on no known medications.
