Sam Fortunas, yoga teacher and owner of Island Fit SUP & Yoga, leads summer solstice yoga on St. George Island. The group, ranging in age from 4 to over 65, met at sunset Friday at the lighthouse to pick up trash on the beach and then practiced yoga at the water’s edge.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on behalf of the United Nations General Assembly, declared June 21 International Yoga Day to celebrate the 5,000 year old tradition of yoga. “Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature,” he said. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change.”
Join Sam for beach yoga every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 9 a.m. at Lighthouse Park. If you prefer yoga indoors, practice with Betsy Nofziger at the Water Street Hotel Tuesdays and Saturdays at 9 a.m. Beginners welcome at all classes.
