Elder Care Community Council (ECCC) receives donations of all types, from wheelchairs to electric blankets, and these items are promptly passed on to those in need. We can’t thank our community, partners and organizations enough for their continued support.
One specific gift that we have found to be rare among our wonderful contributions is a Fidget Quilt. During the later stages of memory decline or other cognitive issues, a person’s hands may fidget or search for things to pull, rub or hold on to. The fidget quilt has zippers, pockets, buttons and different textured items sewn to it to keep hands busy. Plus, they are works of art and beautiful to look at.
“About three years ago my quilt guild in Georgia decided to make fidget quilts for dementia patients as part of its community outreach. My mother had recently passed away with Alzheimer’s disease, so this project had a special meaning for me,” said Jane Broaddus, fiber artist and fidget quilt maker. “Not only are these small quilts easy to make, they’re fun to decorate with all kinds of interesting objects. More importantly, they bring comfort to people in the most dire circumstances.”
Betsy Nofziger, ECCC secretary, said that to date. Broaddus has donated eight quilts, three of which ECCC has found a home for. “It has been my pleasure to hand deliver these awesome gifts of love to seniors in our community and I thank Jane for her efforts and partnering with us,” said Nofziger.
