Roberta Timmons (Henry) Burda passed away at age 93 on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 in Memphis, Tennessee.
She was born on August 15, 1925 in Columbia, South Carolina to Robert and Flora Henry.
After attending Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Roberta worked at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina, where she met her future husband, John L. “Jack” Burda, Jr. The couple married on Sept. 5, 1948, and in 1958, moved to Carrabelle to open Burda Rexall Drugstore, known widely for their Old-Fashioned Soda Fountain and Gift Shop. They happily served others through Burda Rexall for 40 years.
Known as a caregiver to all, she consistently put the needs of others in her community and family before her own. She loved walking on “Her Beach,” searching for seashells and watching the moon rise over the water. She was a faithful member and constant supporter of Fellowship Baptist Church in Carrabelle. She enjoyed spending her summers in the mountains of Maine with Janice, Glenn and their dog, Trevie. Her grandchildren and their families all visited throughout the summer. She loved warm weather, choosing to spend winters in Memphis with Jackie, David, their cat Misty and many of their wonderful friends. No one was a stranger to her, as she lovingly embraced everyone equally, feeling “at Home” in Florida, Maine and Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, who passed away in 2001; her sister, Mary Ann McCarty (2015); her brother-in-law, H.F. McCarty (1998); a twin (who died in childbirth), and by her parents.
She is survived by her two daughters, Janice (Glenn) Davis, and Jackie (David) Quackenbush; five grandchildren, Chrystal (Eric) Greiner, Stephanie (Jack) Day, Sharon (David) Pinto, Aaron (Laura) Davis and Susan (Charley) Fisher; and seven great-grandchildren.
We ask that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Fellowship Baptist Church, Carrabelle, FL 32322 in her honor.
Her memorial service will take place at a later date.
