Shannon “Christi” Jones, 46, passed away in her home Thursday morning, Jan. 3, 2019, after being in declining health from complications of type 1 diabetes.
A lifelong resident of Tallahassee, Christi graduated from Leon High School in 1990. She attended the University of Georgia in her freshman and sophomore year and actively served as officer of Chi Omega sorority. Her health required her to return to Tallahassee where she graduated from Florida State University in 1996 with a major in English and a minor in communications.
Christi’s career included positions at Cumulus Media, March of Dimes, Moore Consulting Group, and Center for Independent Living, where she spearheaded the endeavor to change the name to Ability First.
Christi was an officer with the Junior League of Tallahassee and very involved in projects that benefited our community. She also was actively involved with the creation and development of the Florida Disabled Outdoors Association.
Christi had a wonderful sense of humor that endeared her to everyone who knew her. She never met a stranger. Her family and friends will always remember Christi as a jokester. In later years as her health declined, she never lost her sharp wit. She made friends with all her health care providers in the hospital and kept them in stitches. She never complained about her condition and always sought to look on the bright side of life.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, William Curtis Kirkland, her maternal great-grandmother, Mattie Richardson, her paternal grandfather Donald D. Jones, and paternal great-grandparents, Leila and Herman Miller.
She leaves behind her mother, Jann Kirkland, her father David C. Jones, her stepmother, Tara Lynn Jones, stepfather, Richard R. Roberts, her maternal grandmother, Martha Jane Kirkland, and paternal grandmother, June Reeder, her brother, Miller Jones, and her sister, Genny “Ellie” Jones.
The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at Bevis Funeral Home. The family received friends the hour prior to the service. Interment followed the service at Roselawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the Florida Disabled Outdoors Association (FDOA.org)
Kelly Barber of Bevis Funeral Home assisted the Jones family with their arrangements.
