Taylor’s earns exclusive national recognition
In a year where it helped residents rebuild after summer wildfires and a major hurricane, Eastpoint-based Taylor’s Do it Best Building Supply has earned exclusive national recognition in the independent lumber and building materials industry.
LBM Journal, the leading magazine for the lumber/building material distribution industry, named Taylor’s its 2018 Dealer of the Year in the category of Sales Under $10 million. The award honors companies and their leaders who exemplify the entrepreneurial spirit by excelling at satisfying customers, embracing company improvements and successfully seeking out new business opportunities.
“Recognition like this is both a big surprise and an incredible honor,” said Ken Fish, who co-owns the store with his wife, Kim. “Of course, none of it would be possible without the work and dedication of our entire team, as well as the continued support of our customers and community.”
Aaron and Loretta Taylor bought the store in 1967 and moved the operation to its current location in 1984. Their daughter, Kim, and her husband took over management in 1989. Mr. Aaron, as he’s known in the community, is a spry nonagenarian who declares that he’s “mostly retired.” He drives 75 miles to the office once a month.
The family’s dedication to its employees is legendary; during the first three years of the Great Recession, family took pay cuts of 33 percent for two years and then no salary in the third, all to retain as much staff as they could. Along with the recession, the BP oil spill in 2010 also affected the region.
Post-recession survival, Ken said, has been beneficial for the business and the region, with Taylor’s growing 20 percent year-over-year. He credits the store’s advancement in maintaining a diverse inventory, adapting to technology and adjusting to market trends.
Taylor’s Do it Best Building Supply is backed by the strength of its status as a member-owner of Do it Best Corp., a U.S.-based hardware, lumber and building materials co-op with thousands of independently owned locations in the United States and more than 50 other countries.
