Mobilization and staging of materials began on April 30 for Carrabelle’s Northwest Ave B Commercial Revitalization Project.

Funded by a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity and partnered by the CRA, the first phase of this project will include full reconstruction of NW Ave B from Ryan Drive to NW 5th Street, NW 8thStreet one block north of U.S. 98, and NW 7th Street one block north of Hwy 98.

Full reconstruction involves installation of stormwater drainage systems in all locations mentioned with connection to the stormwater drainage system under U.S. 98. This will be followed by installation of curb and gutter, milling of old existing asphalt, and roadway resurfacing.

Lastly, sidewalks will be constructed on the south side of NW Ave B, west side of NW 9th Street, west side of NW 7th Street, and west side of NW 6th Street, all in the same locations as reconstruction.

A small off-street asphalt parking area will be installed in the right-of-way on NW 7th Street, next to the IGA.

Phase 2 of this project will include NW Ave B from NW 5th Street to NW 3rd Street, and NW 4th Street one block north of Hwy 98, which is planned to begin in the fall.

Project creation began back in Oct. 2015, followed by the tedious CDBG grant application process which included project approval by an appointed board consisting of local citizens.

After CDBG funding was awarded, the engineering and design work began, FDOT permitting, circulation of community awareness letters to surrounding property owners, a publicly noticed community awareness meeting, and the bidding process with project award going to Pigott Asphalt & Sitework of Crawfordville. Project engineered by Inovia Consulting Group.

Carrabelle Community Redevelopment Agency board members include Mayor Brenda La Paz, chairperson; City Commissioners Cal Allen, Frank Mathes; Millender and Keith Walden; and appointed board members Bo May and Rob Powis.

With construction of these improvements, the City and CRA hope to enhance the economic environment for the existing businesses in the project area and to promote economic development with private sector investment in Northwest Downtown Carrabelle.
