A house in Apalachicola’s historic district has been burglarized.

The burglary at the circa 1959 home, at 115 Avenue D, was discovered when the owners arrived to spend New Year’s Eve here. Owners told police they last visited the home over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Apalachicola Police Officer Chet Turner said he is following several leads in the case and believes more than one housebreaker may have been involved. He said he is close to an arrest.

The house is believed to have been entered through a window broken by the intruder. Turner said the house may have been reentered several times after the initial intrusion.

Turner said nothing major was stolen from the house although a number of small items appear to have been pilfered.

He advised other part-time residents to install an alarm system. “If they had had an alarm none of this would have happened,” he said.

Police would like to speak to anyone who noticed activity at the house over the last two weeks.
