Island readies for tonight’s lighting

The tradition of the St. George Island Business Association-sponsored Santa visit the first weekend in December is many years old. This year’s partnership with the Civic Club, St. George Lighthouse Association, Apalachicola Bay Chamber/Island Visitor Center, Dinner Divas, and Tourist Development Council has sent this event into holiday overdrive.

More than 70 volunteers signed up to prepare the area and support the Thursday, Dec. 5 events, beginning at 5 p.m. and featuring the Lighting of the Palms, Santa’s lighted golf cart parade, children’s activity tent, Santa’s toy bag, and lighted children’s wonderland, all at Lighthouse Park.

From Dec. 6 to 8, the Super Santa Sale will be the biggest island-wide sales event ever, with discounts on everything from kayaks to high end bikes, from custom coastal window coverings to handmade oyster jewelry. Participating merchants will offer special gift certificates to make your shopping even easier. Don’t miss free gift wrapping every afternoon between 1 and 4 p.m.

Carrabelle continues ‘Shop Small” campaign

For many Carrabelle area small business owners and shoppers, holiday shopping began with Small Business Saturday last weekend, an event created by American Express to encourage people to patronize small businesses. As a Neighborhood Champion, the Carrabelle Chamber of Commerce joined with the small business community to host a celebration to encourage people to shop and dine local. Almost 30 small businesses and organizations enjoyed gorgeous weather and participated in the Saturday event.

The commitment to “Shop Small” this holiday season has just begun, with the chamber and small business community are offering another way to win great door prizes. To enter the drawing, shoppers bring in a receipt showing a purchase of $10 of more from any of the participating locations made between Dec. 1 and 14. (Participating locations can be found on the Carrabelle Chamber’s website, carrabelle.org or Facebook page under the Small Business Saturday event.) They drop their receipts – with their contact info - at the Carrabelle Chamber office any time before noon on Saturday, Dec. 14. During the Holiday on the Harbor festivities, additional drawings will take place and great door prizes will be given away.
