Seahawks Basketball Program Begins Workouts
Seahawks Basketball Coach Fred Drake, already planning for the 2008-09 season at a spanking new gymnasium, has got the Seahawks pumping iron for next year.
"We've been working out four days a week after school, for the past two months," said Drake, who has announced plans to return next year. "We've been having pretty much of our varsity guys here. We've been weightlifting since March; football and basketball been working out together."
Drake said he's sent home a letter to parents reminding them that if players miss too many workouts, and don't attend at least two dozen workouts, starting April 4, they run the risk of being suspended for a minimum of four games next season.
"They already know the consequences," he said. "That (four games) is minimal and it could be more. I've been disappointed in some of the guys.
"We need the whole team working together or expectations are not going to come through," Drake said. "We need that weight room bad, especially for rebounding. The guys that really need to be in here are the ones that really need to be in here."
Drake said the season's schedule is about three-quarters done. "We need to iron out some final details," he said. "It will be a pretty competitive schedule again."
He said the recruitment process has already begun for the team's two seniors, DeShaun Winfield and Jeremy James, who stand a chance to attend a top Div. 2 school if they can qualify academically. "If don't qualify, they will have to go the junior college route," Drake said.
