Graduate students from Florida State University’s music department will present “An Afternoon of Opera” this Sunday, Jan. 19 at 4 p.m. at Apalachicola’s Trinity Episcopal Church as part of the Ilse Newell Fund for the Performing Arts concert series.

Soprano Abigail Rethwisch, mezzo-soprano Jessica Wax, baritone Andrew Paulson and pianist Justin Landers, all pursuing master’s degrees, and tenor Jamison Walker, a doctoral candidate, will perform selections from both French and Italian operas, as well as Broadway.

The vocalists will present opera selections from Charles Gounod’s “Romeo and Juliet,” Léo Delibes’ “Lakmé,” Georges Bizet’s “The Pearl Fishers,” Gioachino Rossini’s “Il barbiere di Siviglia,” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro,” Giuseppe Verdi’s “Rigoletto,” and Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca.”

The musicians’ Broadway selections will include work from Otto Nicolai’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel,” and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s “Les Misérables,” leading to the finale from Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus.”

The Ilse Newell concert series is administered by the Apalachicola Area Historical Society, with funding support from the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. Admission to the concert is by $5 donation for adults.
