Sheriff Mike Mock, right, and Tax Collector Jimmy Harris, left, wished Dan Sangaree a Happy Birthday last week. Mr. Dan was 102 years old on June 20 and has been celebrating with family and friends from the community.
He was born in 1912 during President Taft's term, Sangaree served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He spent much of his life managing cinemas although he also dabbled in the seafood industry and was an inventor.
He is best known around town as the orchid man for his great expertise with plants. For many years, he spread joy in the downtown business community by loaning blooming orchids to local businesses.
Mayor Van Johnson declared June 20, 2012, Sangaree’s 100th birthday, to be Dan Sangaree Day in the city of Apalachicola.
