The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office began investigating auto burglaries that occurred on St. George Island after Fourth of July weekend. All thefts that occurred were from vehicles being left unlocked during the night and property remaining unsecured beneath rental homes.
Items reported stolen include several ice chests, reel and rods, handguns, wallets, and loose change. During the course of the investigation, detectives were able to identify and interview several suspects in the cases which culminated in the recovery of a large quantity of stolen property. A detailed investigation led to the arrest of six male juveniles involved in the thefts, with more arrests pending.
The items recovered during the investigation include Yeti ice chests, an outboard motor, a generator, several handguns, designer sunglasses, electronics, and miscellaneous fishing equipment. The total amount of recovered items is estimated to be around $6,000.
Detectives are still looking for the owners of certain property that lay unclaimed. Proof of legal ownership needs to be substantiated prior to returning the items.
