ABC Sixth Graders See Legislature in Action
Mrs. Ward's and Mrs. Birdsall's sixth grade civics classes at Apalachicola Bay Charter School got to see the state legislature in action in a most unusual way last month. State Representative Will Kendrick (R-Carrabelle) invited the students to witness his farewell speech to the House of Representatives. This in itself was an amazing opportunity as the students got to sit in the balcony and be recognized by the representatives and crowd.
They were also treated to a special guest that day as University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow spoke to the crowd. While on an average day, the students would watch the representatives debate and vote on issues dealing with new taxes or road construction, the ABC students were able to watch the representatives cast their votes for whether or not the Speaker of the House should catch a Tebow pass on the House floor. Needless to say, the "yea" vote won by a large margin!
Kendrick and his executive secretary, Sybil Kemper, also arranged for the students to tour the Old State Capitol and the Governor's mansion. It was a fantastic and educational trip. Thank you Representative Kendrick and Mrs. Kemper!
