Maryland runners top Redfish Run

Nick Jones of Baltimore, Maryland, nudged out St. George Islander Hobson Fulmer for first place in the men’s division of this year’s 5k Redfish Run Saturday morning.

With a time of 20:47 seconds, Jones, 53, claimed victory. Fulmer, 57, was close behind Jones with a time of 22: 21.

His partner, Judy Graham, 55, of Silver Springs, Maryland, took first in the women’s division with a time of 22:13 seconds, and ran second overall. “I had to learn to run so I could catch her,” quipped Jones.

A pea soup fog engulfed the historic district the morning of this year’s run, but this didn’t seem to bother the athletes. “I like to run in soup,” said Cassie Gary of Apalachicola.

More than 60 runners participated in the event.

Warren Emo; Press Witt, Garrett Chumney, Shelly Shepard, J. Gordon Shuler and Gary, all of Apalachicola, and Nick Yonclas and Kati Hathcock, of Eastpoint finished in the top 20.

Jones said the Redfish Run is an annual tradition for himself and Graham. Each year they travel to the county to visit Wanda and Paul Early on St. George Island and enjoy Seafood Festival.

“The Redfish Run is kind of special to us,” Jones said. “We like the town. It’s a great little classic.”

Jones and Graham said they will compete next in the Cherry Blossom Run in Washington, D.C.”
