Oyster cook off takes off Saturday

The fourth annual Oyster Cook-Off to benefit the Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department will be this Saturday, Jan. 18.

A Friday evening, Jan. 17 reception, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Apalachicola Center for History, Culture and the Arts, will preview the oyster-related silent auction items, along with providing a sampling of the Apalachicola Bay's tasty bivalves

The cook-off on Saturday will start at noon, Judging of the cook-off, and live music and dance, starts at 2 p.m..  Contestants are encouraged to enter with their favorite recipe. All forms of oysters will be available to taste - raw, steamed, and fried. Other food items and refreshments will be available for purchase.

New this year is the Half Shell Hustle Run, a distance of distance of 3000 fathoms, or 5.5k, winding through the historic district.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Entry fees for individuals are $15, and for families, anywhere from two to five members, are $25. Each race participant will receive a canvas tote.
