DJJ advisory board meets today
The Department of Juvenile Justice Circuit 2 Advisory Board will hold its quarterly meeting to discuss juvenile justice issues and board business from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, May 15 at the Holy Family Center, 203 Dr. Frederick Humphreys Street, Apalachicola.
All meetings of the Juvenile Justice Circuit Advisory Board and its committees are open and the public is encouraged to attend.
TIGERS program starting up again
The Friends of the Franklin County Public Library’s TIGERS Program is starting up again in Eastpoint at the new Franklin County Public Library at 160 Hickory Dip.
TIGERS is a year-round, after-school program providing a wide range of activities for youth from age 12 to 18. Specialized services include homework and academic assistance, choice field trips, performance and cultural activities, career and work preparation, internships.
TIGERS in Eastpoint will be led by Cynthia Borden on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 2 to 6 p.m. Registration for TIGERS is required.
TIGERS is an award-winning program funded by a grant from CareerSource Gulf Coast and has been operating in Franklin County since Jan. 2000. TIGERS is open Monday-Friday at the Library’s Carrabelle branch and the Apalachicola program site at the former Apalachicola High School. Time for ‘Camp Funshine’ registration
Enrollment for Project Impact Camp Funshine: Fizz, Boom, Splash is open, for students from pre-K to eighth grade to be served at the ABC Site, and pre-K to 12th grade at the city site. The theme of the Summer Reading Program, “Fizz, Boom, READ” was developed by the 2014 Summer Collaborative Reading Program and the state library system.
Students can earn rewards for their reading time through the summer while helping to boost their skills for the next school year. The focus this year will be on STEM subjects, (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) with other summer highlights including pottery, art and crafts, science experiments, computer technology, chess tournament, sports and several field trips.
The second year of “Boats Rock!” was launched during the April Antique Boat show. A special basketball and leadership camp will also be offered. The summer performing arts program will feature video production with a film premiere at the end of the summer.
Program hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays beginning June 9 and running through July 25, closed for Fourth of July week. Credit recovery classes will be offered at the City Site Monday to Thursday during program hours. Enrollment may be limited.
The Project Impact Summer Program is provided free of charge, with breakfast and lunch provided. Families may enroll their child in Project Impact at either the ABC or City sites or online at projectimpactfcs.org.

Four proposals referred to committee
At the May 6 county commission meeting, County Attorney Michael Shuler and Assistant County Planner Mark Curenton opened one request for qualifications, and three bids for county engineering projects.

Two bids were received for replacement of HVAC equipment at the county courthouse. Keith Lawson Inc. of
Bids were also received for the renovation of the old Florida Highway Patrol station in Eastpoint into a visitor center. Simpler Built, Inc of
Commissioners voted to turn all three bids over to the county engineering committee for review, with Commissioner Noah Lockley voting in opposition to reviewing bids for the visitor center.
Shuler and Curenton also opened qualifications for Lake Morality Road CEI signage and pavement marking. Alday Howell and Associates and Morris Allen and Associates, both of
Curenton who normally serves on the county engineering committee with Alan Pierce and Erin Griffith, recused himself from the decision because he has a cousin employed by Alday Howell. Commissioners chose Shuler to serve in his place.
At the May 6 county meeting, Director of Parks and Recreation, Nikki Millender, requested Susan Riley be promoted to the position of working field supervisor, and given a $1,500 per year raise.
The county commissioners voted unanimously to approve the change.
Millender said Riley’s increased responsibilities would allow work at parks and recreation to continue as normal, even when the director is not present.

Three areas closed to oyster harvesting
On Tuesday, May 13, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) closed areas 1601 and 1611 to oyster harvesting. Area 1642 had already been closed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) because of water quality concerns.
The two areas will reopen when 1642 is reopened, provided they meet water quality requirements.
