Franklin County Senior Services is in need of additional funding for Meals on Wheels.
For about two years, Franklin County Senior Services has been run by agencies outside the county. Seniors in St. George Island, Eastpoint and the Apalachicola are served by Gulf County. Seniors to the east of Eastpoint, including Alligator Point, Carrabelle and Lanark Village are serviced by Wakulla County.
Mathes told commissioners Wakulla Senior Services has been cut by $17,000, leaving Franklin County service $5,000 short of the funds needed for Meals on Wheels and other programs, such as homemaking, and transportation for shopping and doctors’ appointments.
Carrabelle unanimously agreed to donate $500 to senior services, out of a $2,000 budget set aside for non-profit needs. “I only wish we could give more,” said Commissioner Charlotte Schneider.
Pat Phillips, out of Crawfordville, who coordinates the Older Americans Act, said funds from both the United Way and the Area Agency on Aging for North Florida, have been reduced and that Meals on Wheels will be most directly impacted.
“We always depend on fundraisers and donations,” she said. “What we get from the area agencies doesn’t run the program.”
Mathes said about 10 seniors come for congregate meals served at the Senior Services Center across from the Franklin County Senior Citizens Center on Avenue F in Carrabelle. They can get coffee and donuts for breakfast and a “TV dinner” for lunch.
About twice that number has meals delivered to them at home. Homebound seniors may receive either hot meals, delivered Monday through Friday, or frozen meals, delivered every other week. Seniors may receive up to 14 frozen meals a week.
“We ask for a donation of $4 a meal,” said Mathes. “But very few of our seniors pay.”
She said the Franklin County Senior Center received $4,000 this year from the city commission, but Senior Services did not ask to be included in the city’s regular budget.
