On Saturday, March 1 at approximately 4:30 p.m., the Franklin County Sheriff's Office received an emergency call in reference to a burglary in progress on St. George Island. The victim said she was in her residence on East Gulf Beach Drive when she saw a white male enter wearing a black ski mask, white flannel long sleeve shirt and blue jeans.

The woman said the man fled after he saw her inside. The victim and a neighbor gave a description of the clothing and type of vehicle the subject fled in. Within minutes of the attempted burglary, deputies came into contact with a man on Second Street East who fit the physical and vehicle descriptions provided the victim and witness.

Identified as Norman E. Chauncey, 24, Panacea, the man gave consent for a search of his vehicle, and inside officers found a black ski mask under the passenger seat, a white long sleeve flannel shirt in the back seat and he was wearing blue jeans. Officers also found a small amount of cannabis.

Chauncey was detained for several minutes until the victim and witness arrived on scene and identified him as the person who fled from the residence. He was charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling, possession of less than 20 grams of cannabis and driving while license suspended and/or revoked.
