Seahawks Have Great Mentor-Mentee Turnout
On Thursday, Nov. 6 the CFES (College For Every Student) Scholars had another mentor-mentee meet up. CFES, which used to be called Foundation for Excellent Schools, is a nonprofit organization committed to helping underserved youth prepare for, gain access to, and succeed in college.
The fifth and ninth graders participated in this CFES Program. The ninth graders are the mentors and the fifth graders are the mentees. The fifth graders look up to us ninth graders as mentors, so we have to be good role models. The fifth and ninth graders took a survey, and based on their compatibility they were paired up.
In the previous meet-up the mentors met their mentees and got to know them by having a scavenger hunt throughout the school. When we met for the second time, it was a better experience because almost every mentor-mentee pair had already been picked and it was more time for fun. We had an outside party and it was a BLAST! The mentor-mentee pairs could play lots of games while getting to know each other. We could play volleyball, golf, Frisbee, badminton, and other fun games. They also offered ice cream, cookie, and water. There were lots of things we could do.
Being a mentor for the fifth graders is not always about the fun, we are also there to help them in any way we can. Everyone got along. Some thought that the older and younger kids would equal trouble, but in this case they were proved wrong. The program is going great! It was a great turn out!
