Perspectives on the St. George Lighthouse

On May 17, five of the artists visiting for the 2008 Plein Air Paintout, gathered on St. George Island to paint the newly reconstructed St. George Light.
At a showing of the paintings, held at Sea Oats Gallery that evening, it became very clear that the five sets of eyes can have different views of the same subject. Later, the artists commented on the lighthouse and their paintings of it, on art in general and on how they choose the subjects for their art. This is what they said.
Lori Putnam of Nashville painted the lighthouse emerging from a cloud of oleander flowers. She wrote, "In ‘Firmly Planted,' the SGI lighthouse seems to say, ‘I am here, strong and tall, surrounded by all this beauty.' My goal is always to interpret the specific day and time of
