Good Friday blood drive in Rochelle’s honor
A community blood drive will be held on Good Friday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the new Apalachicola fire and police station on Avenue E.
The blood drive is being organized by Carol Barfield in honor of her mother, Pearlie Mae Rochelle, who passed away from myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) in June 2008. Formerly known as preleukemia, MDS causes patients to often develop severe anemia and require frequent blood transfusions.
Rochelle, who would have turned 70 on April 13, received many blood transfusions at the Infusion Center at Bay Medical during her illness. “There is no known cure for this disease but the transfusions prolong the days, and allow the family a few more cherished days with their loved ones,” said Barfield. “I am asking you to help me honor my mother, for in honoring my mother many others will be blessed with a few more cherished days or years.”
The blood drive is being conducted with the help of community liaison Susan Richardson by Northwest Florida Blood Services, a division of Florida Blood Services. All donors will receive a free gift. The only requirements are that donors be at least age 16 with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and present a photo identification.
To schedule a time to give blood, call Barfield at 653-2784.
