Library Hosts El Dia de los Niño Celebration
The Franklin County Public Library with Franklin County Literacy held "El Dia de los Niño", the "Children's Day" on Thursday, May 1, at the Eastpoint Library and Literacy location.
This celebration included many families from dual language homes that attend Literacy's ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes.
This national day for children is celebrated at many libraries throughout the country and is promoted by the Association for Library Service to Children and the American Library Association. Musical games, kite-making, sand art, and turtle/fish pond games were only a few of the festivities on the agenda.
Volunteers from the Library and Literacy helped present a bi-lingual rendition of "Tres Ratoncitos" (Three Mice) and featured children and adults dressed as mice. Monica Varnes, VISTA volunteer for Literacy, translated the story into Spanish as Michael Fox narrated in English.
The colorful piñata, filled with lots of candy, was an exciting finale for the children. Balloons were donated by Bayside Gallery and Florist and vendors from IGA, Piggly Wiggly, and Dollar General Stores generously donated treats for the participants.
Each child received a gift bag with a book, bookmarks, bubbles and bi-lingual education information for the parents.
