APALACHICOLA — The day after Hurricane Michael made landfall near Mexico Beach as a strong Category 4 hurricane, major roads are covered in debris and shut down in some places as authorities work to clear them.

Highway 98 in between Apalachicola and Mexico Beach is severely damaged and impassable. Debris, pine needles, plastic trash, boats, stalled out cars, sand and water are still covering Highway 98 and other major roads in those areas. A clearing crew is out now picking up as much as they can but they still have miles and miles to go.

The Florida Highway Patrol and Florida Department of Transportation closed I-10 in both directions from Mile Marker-85 to Mile Marker-166 so crews could clear debris there. Officials encouraged motorists to seek an alternate route.
