Two main goals have been stated by local government for the recently enacted ordinance regarding Crab Island: safety and family-friendliness.

The prohibition of alcohol on floating businesses may or may not have the desired effect, but it is at least understandable with these goals in mind.

The reasons for prohibiting overnight mooring, starting in 2019, are less clear. Is it better for kids? It is hard to see how. Does it increase safety? To the contrary, moving those structures to and from the area every day will carry inherent risk. It would be safer to leave them in place, with proper lighting.

The clearest motive behind this ban seems to be to discourage businesses from mooring at Crab Island at all. That would please some local residents, but our county commissioners insist that they support business and entrepreneurship, and don’t want to put anyone out of business.

They should either repeal the overnight mooring ban, or be more honest about their motivations.
