WACO, Texas — Winning the Gulf South Conference championship, clinching the No. 1 seed in Super Region Two of the NCAA Football Championship Playoffs and defeating North Greenville to end the regular season gave West Alabama a five-spot bump to No. 17 in this week's American Football Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Poll.

Despite four Gulf South Conference teams earning a playoff berth, West Alabama is the only GSC team in the coaches top 25. West Georgia, who earned a playoff spot, dropped out after losing to West Florida, another GSC playoff team. Delta State, along with UWG and UWF, received votes.

Despite West Alabama being the top seed in the regional bracket of the playoffs, the AFCA voters have three Super Region Two teams ranked above the Tigers in the weekly top 25. Virginia State is 11th, Bowie State 14th and Wingate 16th.

The NCAA playoff committees have Virginia State No. 2 in the region, Wingate No. 3 and Bowie State No. 4, all trailing UWA.

West Alabama is one of four teams nationally who earned a bye in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Division II Playoffs that begin Saturday. The Tigers await the winner of Delta State and Bowie State on Nov. 25 at Tiger Stadium. Kickoff for the second-round game will be at noon central time.
