Melton Junior Strickland slipped away quietly on Friday, Nov. 3, 2017 at home surrounded by his children.
He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Oner Crews Strickland; wife, Martha Gordon Strickland; brothers, Lester Strickland, Jesse Strickland, and Cecil Strickland; sister, Doris Appleton; nephews, Dennis Strickland, Weston Strickland, Les Cook, and Carl ONeal; favorite aunt and uncle, O.L.. and Clara Strickland.
Melton was born Feb. 18, 1935 in Nahunta, Georgia. At the age of 7 he moved to Amelia Island with his family. Upon graduating from Fernandina Beach High School, he began a career shrimping which led him to his forever home of Apalachicola where he met his wife in church. He worked many years at the Eastern and Colonial Stations in Fernandina. After his six children were born, he relocated his family to Apalachicola for good.
He is survived by his sister, Kathleen Hollaway; brothers, Claude Strickland, Alvin Strickland, and Jimmy Strickland; children, Shirley Sapp (Jimmy), Barbara Butler (Kelly), Marcus Strickland (Donna), Jeff Strickland (Cassie), Trish Pendleton (James), and Reggie Strickland (Lisa); grandchildren, Ciera Barnes (Nic), Bryce Carlson (Marlyn), Maranda Coatney, Sarah Strickland, Spencer Strickland, Noah Strickland, Eva Strickland, Lydia Strickland, Katie Strickland, Allie Zingarelli, Taylor Pendleton, Tyler Pendleton, Erica Sapp Turner (Michael), and Colton Sapp; great-grandchildren, Justin Massey, Bradee Shae Carlson, and Kyson Barnes; and many other relatives he dearly loved.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 7 at the First Baptist Church in Apalachicola at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Final resting place will be at Magnolia Cemetery.
In his last days he would say, “I have been abundantly blessed and I am at perfect peace...”
He will be remembered for his gentle spirit and his love for God and Family.
