FORT WALTON BEACH – A homeless man discovered in a stranger’s carport by a Fort Walton Beach Police officer was charged with armed burglary.

As the officer watched, the 40-year-old man went to the back of the house and drank water out of a garden hose.

When the officer asked the man if he lived there, he replied, “I don’t think so,” according to his FWBPD arrest report.

The homeowner arrived and told the officer that the man did not have permission to be there.

When officers searched the carport, they found a backpack that the suspect later admitted was his.

Inside, officers found a stack of mail addressed to the homeowner from a local bank, the report said.

There was also a knife with the blade open.

He was placed under arrest. His backpack also held needles, a digital scale, a spoon and a small plastic bag of crystal methamphetamine, according to his arrest report.

He was also charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
