A drug sweep Saturday night in Apalachicola netted seven arrests, six connected to drugs, and one for underage drinking.

The “Operation Clean These Streets” sweep, a joint effort of the sheriff’s office and the Apalachicola Police Department, involved heavy patrols, from about 10 p.m. until 3 a.m. in the areas in and around 24th and 25th Street, Gibson Road and the Heritage and Southern Villas apartment complex.

“It came as a response to calls and complaints about drug use, gunshots and late night activity,” said Sheriff A.J. Smith. “We will be conducting similar operations such as this one regularly and encourage the people to keep calling to report illegal activities.

“The old ways are gone and there is zero tolerance for drugs in Franklin County,” he said.

Christy Thompson, public relations manager for the sheriff’s office, said the officers did not serve outstanding warrants in the sweep.

Included in the drug-related arrests were Robert C. Maples, 22, Carrabelle; Ian J. Jarrett, 32, Panama City Beach; Brenton Wilson, 20, Apalachicola; James D. Gordon, 22, Apalachicola; Tyrone D. Russ, 38, Apalachicola; and a juvenile. A 20-year-old woman was cited for underage drinking.
