A 30-year-old Eastpoint woman was killed early this afternoon in Gulf County when her vehicle struck the back of a truck on U.S. 98 as she headed west towards Port. St. Joe.
Susan Jolene Colson Cathcart, a 2005 Apalachicola High School graduate, was driving a 2006 Cadillac CTS sedan about 12:15 p.m. when, according to the preliminary Florida Highway Patrol report, she failed to slow and struck the rear trailer of a truck traveling just ahead of her.
The car traveled across the eastbound lanes, and came to rest on the grassy shoulder of U.S. 98, just west of the Cement Bridge.
The driver of the semi-truck, Daniel Shane King, 45, of Panama City, was able to come to a controlled stop on the side of the road. He was not injured in the crash.
Cathcart, who had lived in Pensacola before returning to Franklin County, was taken to nearby Sacred Heart Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to the FHP report.
