Every day, I see the power of music therapy to improve lives for patients and their families through Big Bend Hospice. I witness patients in pain fall asleep and rest peacefully by the end of their music therapy visit. I see patients with dementia, who can’t recognize their surroundings, sing along with songs and smile at their loved ones. I watch as the breathing of patients with respiratory diseases is eased; often these patients are able to calm and rest more easily after their music therapy visit.

These visits I’ve seen demonstrate that music therapy addresses a variety of goals such as pain and symptom management, positive stimulation, communication, emotional support and spiritual comfort.

Each July, we celebrate the board certified music therapists (MT-BCs) of Big Bend Hospice and thank the donors who make their work possible. Our music therapy program is 100 percent community funded and available at no cost to all patients in the eight counties we serve. Without community support, patients and families would not have access to this important service.

Big Bend Hospice is proud to have an outstanding music therapy team. Our program, recognized as a leader in hospice music therapy, has a large internship program, hosting eight interns from all over the country every year. In Franklin County, your hospice music therapist is Ashley Hall, MT-BC. She uses a range of research and evidence-based strategies. Our staff music therapists are board certified, have a bachelor’s degree or higher in music therapy and have received clinical training in addition to acquiring specific musical skills.

Most importantly, they bring comfort and improve the quality of life for Big Bend Hospice patients and their loved ones.

Please join us as we celebrate our music therapists and the donors who give generously to make this service possible. Because of this community support, you can count on Big Bend Hospice – and our music therapists – to be there for you.
