On May 5, 2017 at 4:05 p.m., Carol Elaine Stanton Ward succumbed to her battle with Alzheimer’s.

Carol was born in Sylacauga, Alabama on March 20,1937 to her late parents Winfield “Buddy” and Edwyna Conway Stanton. She went to Sylacauga High School and graduated in 1955. She then attended Mississippi State College for Women and earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education. She moved to Apalachicola in 1959 and was hired to teach elementary school there, where she lived for the rest of her life. It was here that she met the love of her life Darrell Ward and they married on July 7, 1960. So strong was their relationship that they hardly left each other’s side for nearly 57 years.

Carol and Darrell had two children, Vanessa Ward Edenfield and Darrell Stanton "Stan" Ward. She is survived by her husband Darrell, her children Vanessa and her spouse (Mark) and son Stan Ward and brothers William Winfield "Bill" Stanton of Cashiers, North Carolina and Russell Murray Stanton of Dadeville, Alabama and countless cousins, nieces and nephews in both the Ward and Stanton families.

Funeral services were held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses and burial followed at Magnolia Cemetery on May 9.

She is remembered as a sweet, patient, talented person who always had time to give. If you mention Carol Ward to anyone in Apalachicola, they’ll say “Oh, she taught me in first grade” or “She taught my daughter how to play piano.”

She will always be treasured and fondly thought of by anyone who had the benefit of being in her life.
