On Wednesday, May 10, visiting plein air artists participating in the Forgotten Coast Plein Air Paint Out gathered at Riverside Park in downtown Apalachicola to memorialize a gorgeous full moon. They were joined by several dozen merrymakers who howled at the silver orb while dancing on the waterfront. Here, Nancie King Mertz paints by flashlight surrounded by a half-dozen fascinated fans.

Mertz has traveled to nearly 20 countries and around the US to practice her craft. A native of Chicago, where she was twice named “Artist of the Year," her work has appeared on many of the Chicago-themed TV shows including "The Good Wife," "The Good Fight," "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago Justice." She produces well over 100 paintings each year, predominately working plein air.
