Hazel Mae Kirkland Starks, of Jackson, Michigan, passed away at her home on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017 at the age of 70.
Hazel was born to Robert and Cora (Gatlin) Kirklan in Apalachicola on Oct. 23,1946 and was dedicated in the Friendship Baptist Church. She graduated from Quinn High School in 1966 and later attended a training program at Florida A&M University.
She then relocated to Jackson and worked in child care, day care and nursing home care over a span of 40 years, before retiring at the age of 62. She touched the hearts of many and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her three sons, Dwayne (Phaedra) Kirkland, Joe Starks and Chris Higgs; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert (Shirley), Clifton (Tammi) and Carver (Terri) Kirkland; sister, Clatie Kirkland as well as numerous nieces, nephews, loving family members and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Sean Starks; her significant other, Curtis Higgs Sr.; brother, C.W. Davis; and sister, Helen Siples.
A Homegoing Memorial Service was held at noon on Monday, April 24 at Chas. J. Burden & Son Funeral Home in Jackson, Michigan. The family received friends from 11 a.m. until the time of service.
