A coughing fit caused a trucker to drive his empty log truck into the bay Friday morning.

According to a report by Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Cross, Rocky A. Shiver, 54, of Eastpoint, was traveling east along U.S. 98 at about 7:43 a.m. near 10th Street when “he started coughing and inadvertently steered to the right.”

Shiver’s 2006 International tractor-trailer exited the eastbound travel lane and drove onto the south shoulder, and then over rock formations that separate the shoulder from Apalachicola Bay.

The truck continued for approximately 150 feet into the bay. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection as well as the State Warning Point was notified of the incident. No leakage of any kind was reported.

FHP was assisted at the scene by the sheriff's office and a local contractor utilized an excavator to remove the tractor/trailer.

Charges are pending for failure to drive in single lane.
