Franklin County Tax Collector James Harris, Jr. was jailed Friday evening on a charge of having sex with a minor.
According to a news release from the sheriff's office issued Saturday afternoon, Harris was arrested Friday for a second-degree felony, of having sexual activity with a minor age 16 or 17.
The sheriff's office said a complaint was received Friday pertaining to an adult having sex with a juvenile, under 17 years of age.
The release says deputies responded to an Eastpoint address and began a criminal investigation. Later in the evening, it reads, the investigation revealed that Harris had engaged in sexual activity with a 17-year-old male.
Harris was released from jail Saturday morning after posting a $5,000 bond.
Harris, 56, a Democrat, was unopposed in last fall's election in his bid for a seventh term. With 24 years in office, Harris is the county’s longest serving constitutional officer, and has not drawn an opponent in several years, either Democrat or Republican.
