Voncile McLeod, known by many as the “Queen of Apalachicola,” celebrated her 99th birthday at The Bridge in Port St. Joe, accompanied by her 91-year-old brother, Lawrence Sangaree, also a resident of The Bridge, and her sister, 101-year-old Helena Powers of Lake City.

Over 50 family and friends attended the surprise party and celebration.

Voncile nee Sangaree was born March 4, 1918 and raised in Apalachicola. She attended Chapman School and married Carol McLeod, another Apalachicola native. The McLeods set up housekeeping in a cottage facing Battery Park he built with help from his best friend Neel Hinckley, next door to McLeod’s parents’ home. Voncile remained in the home for more than 60 years.

The McLeod family would like to thank all those who attended and made the celebration so special. The family is also is deeply grateful to the Staff of The Bridge for their accommodation and excellent caregiving.
