The Camp Gordon Johnston Association and World War II Museum celebrates the 22nd Annual Camp Gordon Johnston Reunion Days this weekend in Carrabelle, planned especially to honor our remaining World War II veterans as well as recognize and salute all veterans from that war to the present.
All veterans and their family, friends, and supporters are invited to Carrabelle for the public celebration this Saturday, March 11.
On Friday, March 10, at 6 p.m., the Camp Gordon Johnston American Legion Post 82 in Lanark Village invites World War II veterans, active duty military service members, and Legion members to a Southern seafood buffet in their honor.
On Saturday, March 11, kicking off at 10:45 a.m., the annual Camp Gordon Johnston Reunion Days Parade, which pays tribute to all veterans of all branches of service, will begin at 10th street on US 98 in Carrabelle. The parade will head east for 10 blocks on US 98 to Tallahassee St. This community parade will include fascinating World War II vehicles, gorgeous antique cars, beauty queens of all ages, and civic group floats and entries.
In addition, the Military Vehicle Preservation Association - First Florida Chapter will be bringing their amazing restored vintage military vehicles to participate in the parade. After the parade the military vehicles will be on display at CGJ Museum, which will be open to all visitors, with souvenirs available for purchase in the museum ‘Post Exchange’.
The museum will be welcoming visitors throughout the Reunion Days on Thursday from noon to 4 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In addition to the celebrations planned by the Camp Gordon Johnston Association and WWII Museum, the city of Carrabelle is hosting a Fly-in at the Carrabelle Airport on Saturday, March 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.. The Fly-In and the Museum have combined efforts, with vendor booths for both events at the airport. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy good food and fun and to honor all our veterans.
Continuing the special activities, starting at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, a boat excursion will be provided by Towboats U.S. (weather permitting) around Dog Island, where many practice beach landings were held during World War II training. The cost for each participant will be $25, minimum of four persons for each boat trip. This trip is for sightseeing only and participants will not disembark on Dog Island. Saturday evening the Camp Gordon Johnston Reunion festivities culminate with the Reunion Dinner Dance, at 6 p.m. at the Franklin County Senior Center in Carrabelle. Have dinner with actual World War II heroes as well as veteran heroes from more recent times! These men and women have served their country faithfully and honorably, willing to give the "last full measure.” It is a privilege and a delight to thank and honor them at this special event. Special music by "Greg K. & Krew" will be provided. The cost is just $10 and includes dinner and entertainment. Advance ticket purchase is recommended due to limited seating and allows attendees to select their meal choice (shrimp or chicken). Tickets may be purchased at the Senior Center or call 697-3760 to reserve your tickets. Should tickets still be available, they may be purchased at the door.
