A 58-year-old Apalachicola man, well known for pedaling his bicycle around town, remains in critical condition at Bay Medical Center after he was struck by a motorist Tuesday evening.

Melvin Stephens, 58, was bicycling south on 10th Street about 6:08 p.m. when he entered the intersection at U.S. 98 and traveled into the path of a 2014 Ford Fusion driven by DeIara Prince, 27, of Apalachicola, according to the reports filed by Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Mitchell Kauffman.

Prince “was unable to avoid a collision and the front of (her car collided with the left side of the bicyclist,” wrote the trooper. “The bicyclist fell upon the pavement and came to a final rest on the north shoulder of US-98.”

After the collision, Prince came to a controlled stop in an adjacent parking area. Stephens was airlifted to Bay Medical with critical injuries.

FHP was assisted by the Apalachicola Police Department, Franklin County EMS and sheriff's Department.
