Robert L. (Bob) Benson, 90, of Lanark Village, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Jan. 23, 1926, passed peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Aileen Benson, nee Effinger.

Together Bob and Aileen raised five children, Constance Chase (Dr. Connor Chase); Louise Benson (Jenifer Firestone); Robert Benson; Patricia Wright (David Wright); and Daniel Benson (Susanna Benson). Grandchildren include Alison Hopkins, Colleen Wright, Elizabeth Wright, Charles Wright, Jack Benson, and Matthew Benson, and one great-grandchild, Ryan Hopkins.

Bob earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star while serving for the 104th Infantry Division “Timberwolves” of the US Army in Germany during World War II.

After the war, he went to school on the GI Bill and became a CPA. He worked as a financial consultant and advisor for Coopers & Lybrand in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1964, the family moved to Potomac, Maryland where Bob worked as a financial advisor for W.C. & A.N. Miller Development Company. He was employed there for over 25 years and retired as a company vice-president.

A devoted husband and father, he enjoyed gardening, sailing, camping (especially backing the pop-up camper into a campsite and setting it up in the rain), and family vacations at the beach. He was an avid bridge player. Most of all he loved his family.

Bob was a member of the Lions Club for many years. He and his wife, Aileen, moved to Lanark Village in 1992. He volunteered at the Carrabelle Senior Center, helping members of the community with their income tax returns, and also served as the treasurer for the Lanark Village Association. His kind nature and good humor will be missed by all who knew him.

Mass will be said for Bob at The Sacred Heart Church in Lanark Village at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2 and a brunch will follow at St. James Grill. All are invited.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Big Bend Hospice in Tallahassee.
