Milton Houseman, Sr. was born March 17, 1925 in Westville, one of 13 children to the now late Earnest and Elizabeth Callahan Houseman. He passed away at 10:10 a.m. at home Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016 at the age of 91 surrounded by his loving family.
He began serving his country when he was 18 years old. He was drafted into the Army on May 14, 1943. He fought in World War II as an infantryman and antiaircraft gunner. While serving in Northern France and Germany, he earned the American Campaign Theater Service Medal, the Bronze Service Star, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. After returning home he continued to serve for 37 years as a National Guardsman.
In 1950, Milton began serving his community as a sworn police officer with the Apalachicola Police Department. He served for 33 years and retired as chief of police. Other examples of his service are as a member and past master of Masonic Lodge #76, member and chairman of the Franklin County School Board, and member and chairman of the Florida Seafood Festival committee.
Milton loved to catch mullet out in front of his house and the only thing better than that was frying up those mullet to be enjoyed by family and friends. Through the years he enjoyed traveling to meet up with other solders at reunions, going to Biloxi to visit relatives and the casinos. He loved to have a nice shiny car and to visit his buddies down at Ard’s station. He loved to dance and boy, could he could dance. The one thing that put a smile on his face bigger than a good jitterbug was his love for his family.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Joan; his baby sister, Jeannie Lee and husband, Jr.; children: Dianne Duncan and husband, Pap; Milton Houseman, Jr. and wife, Cyndie; Stacey Sutton and wife Penny; Melanie Miller and husband Ted; and Suzanne Salley and husband David.
