Fredrick Melvin Butler, 74,, of Texas City, Texas, passed away at his home surrounded by family on the evening of Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016.
He was born in Apalachicola on Jan. 14, 1942 to Pearlie and George Washington Butler. Formerly of Santa Fe, Texas, Fred lived in Texas City for the past 20 years. He worked as a pipefitter at the BP Amoco Oil Company in Texas City until his retirement. Fred was an avid bow hunter and fisherman, and loved traveling with his wife, Barbara, in their RV.
Fred is preceded in death by his mother and father, and his brothers, Ed Butler and Milfred Butler.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Butler, three children; Tammy Butler Kidd and her husband Don, of Houston, Texas; Fredrick “Rick” Butler of Jacksonville, and Scott J. Butler and his wife Bonnie, of League City, Texas, and also who he loved as his own, Stephen Smith and his wife Naomi of Dickinson, Texas, Michael E. Smith and his wife Cindy of Bayou Vista, Texas, David M. Smith and his wife Chris of Texas City, Texas, and Julie R. Phinney and her husband Kendall of Friendswood, Texas.
Fred is also survived by his sisters, Nancy Coker, Sally Ann Cummings, and Betty Scott; brothers Ramion Butler and George Butler; 14 grandchildren; Joseph Butler, Andrew Butler, Haylie Butler, Jenna Kidd, Carson Kidd, Christopher Smith, Courtney Smith, Bryan Smith, Jonathan Smith, Jayme Ann Smith, Ryan Smith, Kelsey Phinney, Kaitlin Wheat, and Connor Phinney; and eight great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Rosary starting at 7 p.m. at the James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque, Texas. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. at the James Crowder Funeral Home, with Rev. Charles Scott officiating; interment to follow at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Butler, Joseph Butler, Christopher Smith, Bryan Smith, Jonathan Smith, and Connor Phinney.
