To celebrate its 10th anniversary, a long running cable TV series is giving away a prize package valued at nearly $1 million and the loot is located on the Forgotten Coast.
Blog Cabin, a production of DIY, is a home-building series based with a simple slogan: "You Design It, We Build It, You Could Win It!"
The series allows Internet users to vote on design features for a real vacation home and then offers them the opportunity to win the resulting home.
The 2016 Do It Yourself Network (DIY) Blog Cabin sweepstakes runs through Sept. 26. Online users may enter twice per day at DIYNetwork.com and HGTV.com. Full rules are available at DIYNetwork.com.
This year the 3,400 square foot giveaway cabin is located in Panacea just across the Franklin County line. The three-bedroom home sits on 3 1/2 acres of waterfront property with entrance to the Gulf of Mexico.
Along with the home, the winner will receive $50,000 courtesy of national mortgage lender Quicken Loans, a 2016 Mazda CX-5 and a John Deere compact utility Ttractor.
During the renovation, Blog Cabin installed a wall-sized saltwater aquarium; full-sized volleyball court with its own deck and custom seating for spectators, and a tree house connected to the main structure by a raised boardwalk.
A vintage mahogany speedboat was deconstructed and used in the house as part of 10 different renovation projects.
Other decorative features of the house were purchased locally at stores including Purple Martin Nurseries of Crawfordville and the Tin Shed in Apalachicola.
To make the main house compliant with recently changed flood map designations, the house was raised 10 inches which will reduce flood insurance costs for years to come.
Project manager for the renovation was Dylan Eastman who has designed and managed the DIY Network Blog Cabin multimedia experience since 2011. From 2002 on, he designed and built everything from residential additions to custom homes to churches and process plants.
Contractor Rod Moeller of Mallard Cove Construction in Tallahassee was chosen and managed by Eastman to do the remodeling of the DIY Network Blog Cabin.
Over the last nine years, Blog Cabin has remodeled and given away homes in Watts Lake, Tennessee; Asheville, North Carolina; Bethel Springs, New York; Matthews, Virginia; Waldoboro, Maine; Atlantic North Carolina; Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and Winter Haven.
All of the sweepstakes have drawn millions of entries, with the Winter Haven home topping the chart at nearly 24.9 million. – By LOIS SWOBODA
