Apalachicola Main Street’s second annual Autos & Oysters Classic Car Show & Sock Hop will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29. The car show will be held on Water Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the sock hop will be on the City Docks at Riverfront Park starting at 7 p.m. Both are free and open to the public.
As a non-profit organization dedicated to downtown economic vitality and historic preservation, Main Street’s goals for Autos & Oysters are to host a quality event that brings people downtown and stimulates the economy in the off-season. To encourage visitors to spend the weekend, dine, and shop, we are offering package deals.
Last year, visitors who came to town for the car show were offered a special rate when they booked their stay at Water Street Hotel or the Coombs House Inn, and they also received coupons for discounts at Apalach Outfitters, The Tin Shed, and Tamara’s Café.
Any downtown businesses that would like to participate this year are welcome to get on board. Our package deal offers will be promoted via our website and e-newsletter.
Last year’s event was a great success; visitors were impressed with the quality and hospitality of the event. Our judge proclaimed it to be the best first-year car show he had ever attended. And we added a memorable Apalachicola touch to every element of the event. Oysters were served along with our locally brewed Oyster City beer at the sock hop. A small oyster shell containing a faux pearl was artistically affixed to each of the award plaques.
The feedback from business owners was also very positive. We had reports of robust lodging bookings and very brisk sales that outpaced the results of many other more well-established events. Our goal of getting our economic engine running exceeded expectations. We expect even bigger turnout and participation this year, with multiple car clubs in the region already planning to attend.
