Gary Wesley Barber, born Feb. 27, 1958 to Joseph and Erma Barber in Apalachicola, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at home with his love and companion Deanna Valles and his two cats at his side, after a long illness with carcinoid cancer.
He is survived by his two daughters, Melanie Barber and Alisha Cole, husband James Cole and grandchildren, Isaiah, Jordon, Justus, Quinton, Jacob Barber and James Liam Cole; father Joseph Barber; three brothers, Mike (Beth), David (Stephanie) and Troy; and his sister Lisa (Don) and their families.
As a child Gary was lucky to grow up in a house with a loving mother, a hardworking father, three brothers and a sister. He lived on the end of 17th Street in Apalachicola on the water where he learned to swim, boat, fish and hunt at a very early age. Dove and duck hunting became his favorite types of hunting.
Usually when playing some sporting activity with the neighborhood kids, an argument would get started and Gary and his brother David would get in a fist fight. This happened at least two times a week.
When he was little and was sad, he would sit on the front door steps with his arm around his dog Toby while sucking his thumb.
Gary was a mama's boy and he loved her dearly. He confided in her about his problems and never fully recovered from her death.
Gary had a deep commitment to his friends and community and was very generous with his time, money and energy.
He was a volunteer on the Florida Seafood Festival Committee for nine years.
He served as a Florida Park Ranger for 3½ years at the St. Joseph Peninsula State Park in Port St. Joe.
He was an independent life insurance agent for three years and was with Marks Insurance for 16 years. In 2003 he opened Barber Insurance, specializing in life and health policies. Gary will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4 at Carrabelle Christian Center Church, 142 River Road, Carrabelle. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Family and friends are gathering at Gary’s Dad’s house, at 502 West 13th Street, Carrabelle.
Comforter Funeral Home, Port St. Joe, is in charge of arrangements.
