Moms, and dads, needed for strong families

I completely understand that mothers need support. I must, however, tell you that your June 24 story “Baby shower brings boost to pregnant moms,” highlighting the shower for mothers, glorified unwed pregnancies. To some small credit, you attempted to comment on those who had a husband/father figure in their lives. This, sadly, was not the case in the majority of those pictured. It made me weep.

Society continues to send the message to young people that bearing children requires only a male and a female. The babies will be loved, but will be absent the environment best-suited for a strong foundation: a mother and a father who together raise the child. While it takes a “whole village,” the village is no substitute for the parents.

I applaud Healthy Start’s educational efforts. God Bless the babies.
